The Stumpe family of Malmesbury; England's greatest social climbers

A history talk by Tony McAleavy.
Tony will tell the rags to riches story of William Stumpe and how his descendants successfully became part of England's elite.
Stumpe made a huge amount of money manufacturing woollen cloth in the time of Henry VIII and over time the family fortune was used to build Abbey House and Charlton Park and to finance advantageous high society marriages . Stumpe's direct descendants include both Winston Churchill and King Charles III.
This talk is jointly run by Malmesbury Carnival and the Athelstan Museum.
