Nostalgia

Wednesday 16th August

Malmesbury 1917

Continuing Charles Vernon’s fascinating series of illustrated talks about Malmesbury during the First World War. Conditions in the town became more difficult as the war progressed. A shortage of food, increased prices and a grocer forced into bankruptcy. Stricter black-out leading to injuries. Appeals continued against conscription whilst a few conscripts went absent. Parcels were packed for prisoners of war. The hospital expanded again.

On the war front a local lad described his ordeal after his ship was torpedoed, a pilot became an air ace whilst the Earl of Suffolk and 18 other local men died. With thanks to the Civic Trust.

Time: 7.00pm
Venue: Town Hall
Tickets: £5.00
